Kids in New Orleans both need and want genuine outlets to create, express themselves, and tell their stories. At Be Loud, we want to hear what they need to say.
What is Be Loud Camp?
Be Loud Camp is a jam packed week of digital media production, creative play, and community building. Campers (incoming 3rd through 6th grade) explore a wide range of digital media skills (making radio shows, music beats, and movies), build new friendships, and gain the confidence to speak up.
Here is a typical day at Be Loud. We intentionally build opportunities for youth to learn specific digital tools and also play with their peers and explore on their own.
When IS Camp?
We will offer two separate, week long sessions in July (see dates below). Each session will be Monday to Friday from 9:00AM to 3:00PM. Aftercamp will be offered to families for an additional $40. Please indicate that you are interested during registration.
- Session 1– July 11th- July 15th
- Session 2- July 18th- July 22nd
This year, we are asking families to only do one week. Our program is designed for one week and we want to make it relevant and engaging for all campers. We encourage more advanced DJs to consider our Listen To Your City Program in June.
Where is Camp This Year?
This summer, we are very grateful to be hosting our camp at New Harmony High School (3368 Esplanade Ave, 70119). This site provides us multiple classrooms, an awesome studio space, and also tons of outside space- Be Loud on the Bayou!
We will also spend one day each session exploring the neighborhood and capturing the sights and sounds of the area.
How much is Camp?
Camp costs $250 per week. With that, cost should not be an obstacle in attending camp. We reserve half of our spots for full and reduced scholarships. If interested in scholarship, please reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org
How Will Covid-19 Affect Camp?
We take the safety of our campers very seriously and are monitoring local and federal guidance on how to proceed this summer. We will be updating our current expectations below and will follow up with families on these exact guidelines.
All programming will be designed with safety, sanitation, and distance as a priority. Please read our current safety guidelines here for specific details. We believe that this week can provide a very necessary and genuine outlet for your child to share their experience over the last few months.
Who is leading this camp?
Alex Owens taught the Innovator’s Workshop at Bricolage for five years, providing students the space and tools to design, build, and make everything from stop motion animations to cardboard prototypes.
With partner Diana Turner, they launched BricoRadio, a student-run radio station that featured the stories, music, and good work of the Bricolage community. Be Loud Studios is a product of that effort as we bring radio and digital media tools to learning communities across New Orleans.
